A wired doorbell connects to fixed cabling in the home rather than relying only on replaceable or rechargeable batteries. A traditional model activates an indoor chime when pressed, while a wired video doorbell can also provide live viewing, motion alerts, two-way audio, recording, and app access through a connected camera system.

A wired doorbell is usually better for dependable power, frequent activity, and continuous recording on supported models. A wireless doorbell is easier to install and reposition, especially where suitable cabling is unavailable. Choose wired for a permanent, low-maintenance setup, or wireless when simple DIY installation and placement flexibility matter more.

A wired doorbell normally receives low-voltage electricity from a doorbell transformer connected to the home’s mains supply. Two small wires carry power from the transformer to the outdoor button or video doorbell and may also connect to an indoor chime. Voltage requirements vary, so always follow the model’s installation specifications.

Most wired doorbells need two low-voltage conductors running from a compatible transformer to the doorbell, with additional connections if an existing mechanical chime remains in use. Requirements differ by model. For example, eufy Video Doorbell C31 needs a 16–24V, 30VA transformer for pre-roll and continuous recording.

You may not need an electrician when compatible low-voltage wiring and a transformer are already installed, and the manufacturer permits DIY replacement. Professional installation is wiser when new cabling, a transformer, mains connections, or consumer-unit work is required. In the UK, fixed electrical work must meet applicable safety and Building Regulations requirements.

Doorbell wiring is commonly low voltage, so the shock risk at the button wires is lower than with household mains. It is not risk-free, however, because the transformer connects to mains electricity and faults or incorrect wiring may be dangerous. Isolate the circuit before work and use an electrician when uncertain.

A wired doorbell depends on suitable cabling and a compatible transformer, so installation can be harder or more expensive in homes without existing wiring. Placement is less flexible than with battery doorbells, and power cuts can stop operation unless backup is available. Older chimes may also need bypassing, replacement, or extra accessories.
